Year 2 Curriculum Overview 2018

Year 2 British Science Week

The theme for Science week 2019 was 'Journeys' so Year 2 decided to use the topic of Space to explore the idea of journeys. Our week started with an alien spaceship crash landing in the grounds of the KS1 building outside 2G's classroom. The children didn't believe it at first, but when they went outside to investigate, to their surprise they did indeed discover a battered and broken spaceship that had crashed into a tree! The children were asked how they could help the aliens return to their planet  so they decided on making rockets. The children worked in pairs to design and create their own rockets using a range of materials, then using water and an air pump, set them off to see which rocket would fly the highest and would be the best for sending the aliens back to their home planet. The children absolutely loved doing this and were even shocked by how high some of their rockets flew! Well done Year 2 - the aliens are bound to get home safely because of your hard work and scientific discoveries!

Year 2 World Book Day

Year 2 had a fantastic day celebrating World Book Day 2019! The theme this year was 'bedtime stories' and everyone came to school in their favourite cosy and snuggly pyjamas, dressing gowns and slippers. The children even got to have some delicious hot chocolate and marshmallows while reading their books! To celebrate reading on this special day, the children also spent some time in the school library over in the KS2 building, squashing up on comfy chairs reading some of the books, comics and magazines and chilling back in the classroom reading area, reading their favourite book. We also read the exciting and unusual picture book 'Flotsam' by David Weisner. The children wrote poems and postcards based on this book, and even created their own stories using the images from the picture book which they all loved doing. Children also used iPads to take pictures of each other holding the previous photo, just like in the book! The children were extremely excited while doing this activity in particular, but everyone had a wonderful day and the children thoroughly enjoyed sharing their passion for reading.

Year 2 Silly Science Workshop

Year 2 enjoyed a silly science workshop, taking part in silly scientific experiments that involved fire, bubbles, wind blowers and much more! The workshop really ignited the children's curiosity into the scientific world, and was led by the exciting and energetic Professor Silver Nitrate. The focus of the workshop was on gravity, thrust, lift, the power of pressure, chemical reactions, how and why molecules bond and most importantly - explosions! The children loved every minute of it!

Year 2 Salads

The children worked in pairs during their D&T topic to design and create their own healthy rainbow salads and fruit salads after taste testing and evaluating other salads already available in supermarkets. The children tried to identify and taste test a range of fruit and veg including but not limited to lettuce, tomato, cucumber, red onion, carrot, spinach, radishes, peppers, sweetcorn, butternut squash, beetroot, apples, oranges, bananas, strawberries, raspberries, grapes, pineapple, melon, mango, kiwis, and pomegranate. The best bit was, the children got to take them home and eat them!

Year 2 Minibeast workshop

Year 2 thoroughly enjoyed the visit from Andrew the bugman again this year! They had the opportunity to meet Marge the Giant African millipede, Charlie and Lola the Madagascan hissing cockroaches, Wallace and Gromit the sandfish from North Africa, Crunchy Nut the cornsnake originally from North America and Spinderella the spider from South America. The visit was to inspire and enrich the children's vocabulary and knowledge about minibeasts and it certainly did that! The visit was exciting, engaging, very hands on and the children learnt so much during this experience. A fun day was had by all!

Year 2 Pirate Day

Ahoy there me hearties!

Year 2 enjoyed a swashbuckling day of pirate fun to promote their Autumn topic ‘Land Ahoy!’ The children were immersed into a world of pirates long ago to provide them with inspiration for writing activities throughout our topic.

We were visited by a real-life Pirate who taught us all about Pirate life. We made our very own eye-patches and even some scrumptious sea biscuits!
