St Clare's Debatemate Squad attended their second UDL round at Plymouth yesterday (Tuesday 13th March). They had a wonderful time and took part in two debates:
1- This House Believes that voting should be compulsory for everyone over the age of 18.
2- This House Believes that the internet should be banned for children under 16.
The pupils really enjoyed their opportunity to debate against other pupils from schools around Manchester.
The year 5 team won their second debate, and the year 6 team won both of theirs All pupils thoroughly enjoyed their taste of victory!
Some of the things the pupils said about the event are...
"I really enjoy doing Debatemate because it gives every child a chance to improve their confidence and that they can learn a skill that they can use in later life. I find it really fun as I like to persuade people and get my point across. It helps us make decisions that we can use in later life and gives us life skills. I believe that doing Debatemate over the past year has made me a better person and more reasonable." (Faye)
"Debatemate is a great programme, it gives children a chance to express what they think and feel." (Prisca)
"Debatemate is a really interesting way for me to express my feelings." (Lily)
"This program really helps me with my confidence and allows me to express my beliefs honestly." (Paolo)
"Before I get up to debate, I feel nervous but once you begin your speech you're mind just sets free and you can say anything that you want. The whole experience is a great adventure in life and debating can help in many ways, improving every day life, and helping me get my point across to other people, and the persuasive techniques I have learnt help me get anything I want, like even a new pair of shoes!"
